Six months ago we were introduced to the Manchester Village Spartans RUFC who were looking for a healthcare partnership to keep their players well and get any injured personnel back ready for selection as quickly as possible.

Since then it has been an absolute privilege to work with such an organised club and some of the most dedicated and committed amateur athletes we’ve ever encountered!

The Village Spartans in full force at Pride 2018!

This weekend the Spartans are heading to the 2019 Union Cup in Dublin for their end of season finale! The Union Cup is the 2nd largest gay and inclusive rugby tournament in the world and Chews Health are delighted to have helped the Spartans take an almost fully fit squad! (Sorry Simon! So close… we bet it was Mark’s fault!)

Our MD Jack recently reviewed the notes and reports of our Spartan patients and was very pleased with the communication between our clinical lead Mark Reid and director of rugby Neil Mason; ‘Each Spartan player’s initial assessment includes a report from the assessing clinician which is reviewed by Mark to ensure clear guidance to coaching staff and players optimises their recovery. This has kept players in training and playing with modifications when traditional instincts would have led them to having a projected time off.’

Clinical Lead Mark Reid is also pleased with his team’s clinical management of the cases, noting that each player’s specific performance needs have been clearly integrated into their clinical care, even in instances where he has not been the treating clinician; ‘Once safety is ensured, rugby should be fun. There is no reason why this shouldn’t be replicated in rehabilitation wherever possible. Whilst there are similarities, position specific differences in rugby union must be understood and accounted for, so I’m pleased to see examples of my team creating drills that bridge the gap between rehab and performance.’

We look forward to introducing you to a few of our Spartan patients in coming weeks via videos and case studies but for now, here’s stills of scrum-half James’ medicine ball drill and prop forward Leigh’s grappling drill. Two recovering players who looked destined for the operating table only a couple of months ago!

Bringing the floor to James to offload his groin!
Leigh mauling Jack through the back wall of our gym!

Thanks so much for your hard work gents and all the best in Dublin! We hope you don’t need us too much in the aftermath but if you do, we’re here!
